Staff Bios

John J. Lothian is the founder of MarketsWiki, the John Lothian Newsletter and co-founder of Environmental Markets Newsletter.  He is a futures broker, newsletter editor and publisher, Commodity Trading Advisor and industry consultant.  He is head of electronic trading for The Price Futures Group, Inc. (www.pricegroup.com), one of the industry’s leading Introducing Brokers.  He is also editor and publisher of the John Lothian.  Additionally, John is the President & CEO of John J. Lothian & Company, Inc., an National Futures Association  member Commodity Trading Advisor. 

John joined The Price Group in late 1997 as President of a newly created Electronic Trading Division.  He is responsible for an operation that offers a choice of online trading platforms.  He is also registered with Price Group affiliate, Price Asset Management, Inc., and helps CTAs market their money management programs.

John is the editor and publisher of the John Lothian Newsletter, a daily email intelligence briefing about what is going on within the worldwide futures and securities communities. The newsletter was created to help the traders manage the historic level of change occurring within the futures and securities industries through the dissemination of information and commentary. The voluntary pay newsletter is read daily by traders, brokers, brokerage executives, exchange staff, exchange members, regulators, media, vendors, independent software vendors, industry leaders, and other parties with a professional or personal interest in the futures and securities industries.

In 2007 John founded MarketsWiki, an online open source encyclopedia, or wiki, powered  by contributions of paid subscribers to both newsletters.  MarketsWiki (www.marketswiki.com) launched on January 11, 2008.

Previously John was a part owner of a small Introducing Brokerage firm, an account representative with a CBOT member firm owned by the late John H. (Bud) Frazier and a broker with a Chicago based FCM. He started his career as a news reporter with Knight Ridder/Commodity News Service. Additionally, he worked for discount commodity firm First American Discount Corp. (“FADC”) during their early years. FADC is now part of M F Global, Inc. (formerly Man Financial Inc), the clearing firm used by The Price Group.

John was a member of the MidAmerica Commodity Exchange in 1989-90 and prior to that a member of a proprietary trading group at LIT America.

He is a 1983 graduate of Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana and holds a bachelor of science degree in general management/finance and a bachelor of arts in mass communications/journalism.

Additionally, John is the District Chairman of Potawatomi Trails District of Three Fires Council, Boy Scouts of America. He serves as Cub Scout Leader, Boy Scout Assistant Scout Master and merit badge counselor. He is also an AYSO soccer referee.

John is married and lives in Elmhurst, IL with his wife Cheryl and their three children.

Jim Kharouf is editor in chief of John J. Lothian & Company, Inc. and editor of the Environmental Markets Newsletter.

 He has been a reporter and editor since 1989 covering all aspects of business from stock, options and futures markets to real estate. 

As a freelance writer and editor since 2001, Jim writes extensively on securities, indexes, commodities, currencies and bonds in the United States, Europe and Asia and currently serves as the US correspondent for Futures & Options Week. He also contributes regularly to magazines such as Stocks, Futures and Options – SFO Magazine, Active Trader and The Banker.

He also helped launch Traders Source magazine in January 2004 and served as editor of that publication, which covered financial and commodities futures and options markets.

Jim has extensive experience with daily and weekly newspapers in the US and Europe. He reported on banking and technology for the Budapest Business Journal in Hungary from 1995 to 1996. He also served as an associate editor for Futures Magazine, covering international markets and reporting on various market sectors from 1996 to 1998.

Prior to working in Budapest, he covered the retail sector in Chicago, Chicago real estate and the U.S. and local economy as a business writer for the Daily Southtown from 1992 to1995. Jim began his reporting career in North Carolina in 1989, reporting for the Daily Advance in Elizabeth City, NC and then the Goldsboro News-Argus in Goldsboro, NC from 1990 to 1992.

He graduated from Marquette University in 1989 with Bachelor of Arts degrees in journalism and political science. He resides and works in Chicago.
